"A
year which will leave a lasting legacy"
Meeting
Lou Howard
Promising to beat the millennium with a feast of
celebrations, Hull700 needs the guidance of somebody with imagination,
commitment and a cool head.

Lou
Howard, has been appointed the Hull700 celebrations manager,
and her career history made her the perfect candidate. Lou has experience
of being in the spotlight and is no stranger to raising the profile
of the city. A former bass player in the Red Guitars, signed by
Virgin Records, Lou and her fellow musicians drew national attention
to Hull in the 1980s. The University of Hull law graduate is still
an active musician, playing in local band Gagarin and has recently
been interviewed by the veteran presenter John Peel for a new TV
series called Peel off the Ring Road. "The job of celebrations manager
is a real challenge for me," said Lou. "It gives me great pleasure
to be involved in something which will have a long-lasting positive
effect on Hull.
"Hull700 is
a chance to market the city to an international business audience
through many of the high profile celebrations. It is of vital importance
that local businesses play a part and see Hull700 as an opportunity
not only to market themselves, but also to help attract inward investment
to the city.
"Hull700 must
have substance. The involvement of local businesses will add real
weight to the celebrations. A chance like this comes once in a life-time
and it is up to individuals and organisations to utilise it to its
full potential," she said.
The significance
of Hull700 should not be underestimated. Hull CityVision Ltd, which
has won almost £73m for the long-term regeneration of Hull through
the Government's Single Regeneration Budget and European funding,
commissioned London-based image consultants, Wolff Olins to advise
on Hull's marketing strategy. Among their recommendations was that
Hull should be promoted as a 'pioneering city', seizing the opportunity
provided by the 700th anniversary and using it as a launch pad.
It is an idea
which has been met with great enthusiasm in the city. A marketing
group set up to ensure that Hull's 700th year receives maximum publicity,
is currently working on an extensive strategy of print, advertising,
promotions and exhibitions.
"Being a part
of Hull700 will contribute to the future success of our city." said
Lou. Originally from Manchester, Lou's roots are now firmly placed
in Hull. "I didn't expect much from Hull and I was very surprised,"
she said. "Before I came here, my attitude towards Hull was based
on ignorance. That's why I relish the idea of being part of something
which will change people's perceptions of a city which has a great
deal to offer. "Hull 700 is not only a year of celebrations, it
is a year which will leave a lasting legacy."
