Hull Tapestry Exhibition
17th of July to 30th August 1999
Guildhall, Room C3
This tapestry depicts in colourful and varied stitch the history and achievements of Kingston upon Hull. Included in the panels on view are the founding of the city, together with its seafaring links and its accomplishments in art, music and literature. This is an ongoing project of ultimately, 22 panels. The enterprise has been commissioned by the City Council and is worked, under professional supervision, by volunteers of all ages, male and female. Open 17th & 18th July, then Monday to Friday 9.30-4.30pm.

A concert of 20th century music for Cello and Piano preceded by open rehearsals and an educational seminar on the playing of this music at the end of the 20th century. The performance will be in the round with accompanying video projections of the performer's hands playing the instruments.

English Civil War Society - Re enactment

A grand scale re- enactment involving 1,000 troops and 20 horses. A series of events will take place over several weeks, culminating in a grand finale in West Park on Saturday and Sunday 24th & 25th July 1999. An educational Living History event will take place at Wilberforce House from Monday 12th to Friday 16th July 1999.
Pennine Balloon Association - Hot Air Balloon Festival

The Red Hot Fiesta

City Centre and Queens Gardens
Street artists and musicians from Japan, Africa, Asia and Europe will descend on Hull City Centre to celebrate Hull700 in global style. Master drummers, New Orleans street parade, African music and dance will take place in the pedestrianised City Centre and Queens Gardens. Local groups will be displaying their talents in the Queens Gardens all-day picnic.
It's all absolutely free. Then in the evening do not miss the fantastic ska dance sounds of 10 piece band Jazz Jamaica with special guest saxophonist Andy Sheppard, local bands and DJs at the City Hall.
The Hull700 International Jazz Festival
31st July to Sunday 8th August 1999.
Venues, City Centre, City Hall, Hull Truck Theatre, Ferens Art Gallery and the Marina Boatshed.
Hull's Jazz Festival is one of the most popular in the country and has been expanded especially to celebrate Hull700. Kicking off with the Red Hot Fiesta Day, the Festival will take over the City's streets, theatres and even its boatshed and art gallery.
International artists such as Jazz Jamaica will join leading British Jazz stars such as Andy Sheppard to provide a wide variety of jazz styles. As ever the Festival will finish with The Big Free World Music Weekend at Hull Marina Boatshed, when thousands of visitors come to Hull to soak up the atmosphere of cool jazz, sunshine and boats!
